onday through Friday,
you can find Sandra
Yeh, MD, Springfield,
Illinois, in typical
operating room garb
with patients dependent on her for
vision-saving operations. But come
the weekend, it's Dr. Yeh who looks
forward to being dependent upon
others—or at least acting like she is.
In the summer, Dr. Yeh trades
her latex gloves for silk ones, her
scrubs for a hoop skirt and petti-
coats, and her mask for a peacock
feather fan as a Civil War reenactor
with the 10th Illinois Volunteer
Cavalry Regiment. As a lady visiting
her husband and 2 sons on the bat-
tlefield—a vivandiere—Dr. Yeh as a
Civil War-era woman is, as she said,
"helpless and delicate."
"It's great," she said.
When she's not watching her
men in battle, she might be giving
a lecture to visitors from the public
about women's attire from the era
or sharing information about the
proper etiquette of the time. For
example, while the men in her life
will stay over night at the camp for
such reenactments, Dr. Yeh retires to
a hotel for the evening.
"It would be scandalous to stay
there after hours," she said.
Dr. Yeh has been interested in
the American Civil War since grade
school. "I had a really good history
teacher in the 8th grade, and we
spent a whole year on the American
Civil War—loved it," she said.
Her husband, Greg Kane, DDS,
a dentist by work week and captain,

weekend, also had an interest and
found a unit for the whole family to
join 7 years ago. Their boys, 9 and
14 years old at the time, however,
weren't keen on the idea of partic-
ipating at first. Dr. Yeh said it was
