June 2016 EWAP NEWS & OPINION 5 MEETING HIGHLIGHTS 29th APACRS annual meeting to 'Inspire' by Chiles Aedam R. Samaniego EyeWorld Asia-Pacific Senior Staff Writer T he APACRS is set to inspire an estimated 1,800 delegates from over 45 countries at its 29th annual meeting to be held at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC), amid the stunning beauty of Bali. The renowned haven for travelers was chosen for its serene natural vistas featuring exotic tropical terrains and gorgeous beaches that serve as backdrop for the island's thriving culture—the perfect balance between tranquility and vibrant activity for relaxing the body, rejuvenating the soul, and exciting the mind. Working together with the Indonesian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (INASCRS) the APACRS once again offers its streamlined yet comprehensive scientific program. The organizing team has put together a faculty consisting of some of the world's most brilliant minds—the global ophthalmic community's most inspiring members. APACRS LIM Lecture Perhaps the most important session of the APACRS annual meeting is the APACRS LIM Lecture, established in honor of the society's late founder, Prof. Arthur Lim. This year, the honor of delivering this prestigious lecture goes to Oliver Findl, MD, Professor of Ophthalmology and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Hanusch Hospital, Vienna, founder and head of the Vienna Institute for Research in Ocular Surgery (VIROS). He will be giving his lecture on "Achieving Emmetropia with Lens Surgery – Still some way to go?" discussing how major advances in biometric measurements and a more thorough understanding of IOL power calculation has contributed to the achievement of better refractive outcomes in the context of the challenge of high patient expectations, with particular emphasis on the use of intraoperative measurements of the aphakic eye using wavefront sensors and OCT. Prof. Findl will deliver his APACRS LIM Lecture at the Opening Ceremony on 28 July 2016, 08:30 – 10:00 hrs in Hall 4. CSCRS: All I Want is Everything… Presbyopia Solutions The Combined Symposium of Cataract and Refractive Societies (CSCRS) is a core part of the APACRS annual meeting's scientific program. At this year's CSCRS, leading thinkers representing the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) will join experts from the APACRS to revisit all the options currently available to address presbyopia. These range from multifocal IOLs to traditional pseudoaccommodative IOLs and, more recently, extended range of focus IOLs. The CSCRS will take place on 28 July 2016, 10:30 – 12:30 in Hall 4. APACRS MasterClasses APACRS is once again offering attendees the chance to learn from masters of cataract and refractive surgery with its popular series of MasterClasses. This year, in addition to sessions on manual small incision cataract surgery, IOL fixation, toric IOLs, biometry, pterygium surgery, preoperative diagnostics and imaging, and phakic IOLs, the society is offering five new sessions on femtorefractive procedures, vitrectomy for anterior segment surgeons, chopping and pre- chopping, glaucoma implants, and pediatric cataracts. The MasterClasses will take place on Days 1 and 4 of the meeting, 27 and 30 July 2016, 13:30 – 17:00 hrs. APACRS Film Festival Awards Ceremony The Film Festival is one of the highlights of the APACRS meeting, featuring the best films from around the world competing for the top APACRS Film Festival Awards. Cataract surgeons are challenged to emulate Top Gun surgeons who make surgery look so simple. At this symposium, international surgeons present their subtle surgical tips and maneuvers that attendees can bring home and use the next time they step inside their operating rooms. The Top Tip as chosen by attendees will be awarded a prize. The Top Gun symposium will be on 30 July 2016, 10:30 – 12:00 hrs in Hall 1. The 29th APACRS annual meeting will be held from 27 to 30 July 2016 at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center. Films are available for viewing at the Exhibition Hall located at BNDCC 1 from 28 to 30 July 2016, 08:30 – 18:00 hrs. The Film Festival Awards Ceremony— integral to the success of the Film Festival—will take place on 29 July 2016, 18:15 hrs in Hall 4. Producers are encouraged to attend the Awards Ceremony; the results will only be announced then. Top Gun—Cataract Surgery Tips
