EW NEWS & OPINION May 2016 25 Editors' note: The sources have finan- cial interests with Sensimed. millimeters of mercury, we cannot directly apply the lessons of all of our major clinical trials to its out- put." This, however, does not limit the data's usefulness. Triggerfish output characteristics may be useful in identifying patients at high risk for progression independent of— or even additive to—IOP data, he explained. Despite having obtained marketing clearance in the U.S., Sensimed CEO David Bailey said in a statement that the company's first goal is to "work closely with the glaucoma community to design and execute a major post-approval study to confirm the use of the Sensimed Triggerfish signal to predict the course of progression of the disease." "The overall aim is to build ad- ditional clinical utility for the device and establish ocular volume change patterns as a significant, standalone reference biomarker for use in the management and treatment of glau- coma," Mr. Bailey said. Dr. Realini and Dr. Mansouri said they hope further research with the device will lead to more un- derstanding about the relationship between the dimensions of the eye and IOP. "I think it has the potential to help us better understand the fundamental mechanisms behind glaucoma and which IOP factors are related and potentially predictive of glaucoma progression," Dr. Mansouri said. "It also helps to understand treatment success and possibly whether individual timing of drop application (based on timing of peak IOP) may be superior to the current rigid regimen ('chronothera- peutics,' 'IOP modulation')." Overall, Dr. Realini said it's exciting that Sensimed received the green light to market the Triggerfish in the U.S. "This will open the door to a huge expansion in research that will likely help clarify the device's role in the evaluation and management of glaucoma patients," he said.
