67 EW ASCRS•ASOA 2016 Support a great cause and burn off some of those beignet calories F or the fourth year in a row, the ASCRS Foundation is hosting a 5K run and 1-mile walk to benefit the humani- tarian work being done by the foundation in Ethiopia and the U.S. The Run for Sight, cosponsored by TearLab (San Diego) and Shire (Lexington, Massachusetts), will start and finish at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans on Sunday, May 8, with runners on their marks at 6:30 a.m. The race course will take participants through the park along the Missis- sippi River and, for 5K runners, up historic Esplanade Avenue. "The ASCRS Foundation Run for Sight is a fun way to balance out all that great eating in New Orleans with some exercise—and at the same time help a great cause," said Don Bell, ASCRS chief operating officer. "Runners of all ages and abilities turn out." Mr. Bell went on to note that the course is flat and scenic, and with the race taking place at an early hour, it "allows folks to shower, change, and get back to the meeting without missing anything." Buses will be available to shuttle participants from their hotels to the race site and back to the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Conven- tion Center, where the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress is taking place; they can then catch buses to their hotels. The $30 race registration fee includes a T-shirt and water bottle. Runners will also receive breakfast at the site, and there will be DJ enter- tainment to pump up the crowd. The top 3 male and female finishers in each age category will be recognized with medals. Last year's Run for Sight in San Diego drew 400 participants, and Mr. Bell said they're hoping for an even larger turnout this year. In 2015, a total of $65,000 was raised to support the work of the ASCRS Foundation. "TearLab and Shire have been generous supporters of the Run for Sight, and all the funds go to help the foundation's humanitarian work in Ethiopia and here at home in the U.S.," Mr. Bell said. "In 2015, the foundation's Robert Sinskey Eye Institute in Addis Ababa saw more than 19,000 patient visits, and the foundation's U.S.-based Operation Sight network delivered more than 400 charitable cataract surgeries to needy patients right in their own communities." Interested attendees can reg- ister ahead of time and find more information online at www.tracs. net/ascrs5k. Onsite registration and information will be available at the Run for Sight booth of the meeting as well.
