64 EW ASCRS•ASOA 2016 Nearly all of ASOA's interactive workshops will take place on Friday, May 6. "Simple: The Inner Game of Ophthalmic Practice Success" lead by John Pinto from 8:00–10:00 a.m. will be based on his new book, fea- turing topics like efficiency, profit, governance, and decision making. A half-day workshop with ASOA Immediate Past President John Bell MBA, COE, and President Daniel Chambers, MBA, CEO, will involve case studies and best practices for dealing with difficult personali- ties. An afternoon workshop from 2:00–4:00 p.m. lead by the Alcon Customer Management team will cover communication techniques that can "enhance the quality of care delivery and understanding of different personality types," accord- ing to the preview description. There will also be a COE review course with Part 1 being held on Friday, May 6, from 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. and Part 2 on Saturday, May 7, from 1:00–5:00 p.m. The ASOA Networking Lounge will feature various 30th anniversary activities. Mr. Pinto will be signing copies of his new book, Simple: The Inner Game of Ophthalmic Practice Success, in the ASOA bookstore. Another highlight on Sunday will be a joint symposium hosted by ASCRS and ASOA on the topic "Col- laborative Efforts with Payers: Friend or Foe?" from 1:00–2:30 p.m. A lunch program exclusively for COEs on Monday, May 9 from 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. will feature guest speaker Bruce Wilkinson, CSP, who will discuss "Bringing Fun and a Positive Attitude Back to Work and Life." ASOA's Administrator Begin- ner's Circle (ABC) group will also host a lunch Monday specifically for attendees with 4 or fewer years of practice management experience. The ASOA Opening General Session, which will kick off ASOA's 30th anniversary celebration, will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 7 with keynote speaker Mike Rayburn, CPS, CPAE. Mr. Rayburn, using his "amazing guitar work and hilarious comedy as a metaphor," will speak about how a team can become more innovative to ulti- mately "transcend the status quo to stop managing change, and lead by creating change," according to the event's description. Roundtables taking place from 11:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday will feature topics like audit issues, clinical efficiency, Certified Ophthal- mic Executive (COE) certification, integrating the femtosecond laser, ASOA kicks off its 30th anniversary celebration and hosts a variety of offerings for all levels of practice management staff, as well as physicians F rom the advanced adminis- trator to the billing special- ist to the compliance officer, there is something for the entire ophthalmic practice management staff—including phy- sicians—at the 2016 ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress. The ASOA Congress on Oph- thalmic Practice Management, May 6–10 in New Orleans, includes several tracks, each featuring dozens of relevant sessions. ASOA tracks include: advanced administrator; ambulatory surgery center; business management; coding and billing; electronic health record (EHR) and health information technology; hu- man resources; leadership and stra- tegic management; marketing and business development, risk manage- ment and compliance; subspecialties including optical, retina, cosmetics, and hearing; and workshops. Certain ASOA courses are part of the "Business of Ophthalmolo- gy Standards (BOOST)" track. The BOOST track, a selection of ASOA CME-designated courses, identifies programming for the physician wishing to learn more about topics like business management, profit di- versification, human resources, EHR, coding and reimbursement, and risk management and compliance. "Being able to see that the pa- tients are able to continue a normal life by the physicians reversing some of the problems with their eye diseases or keeping them so they're [manageable]—it's been rewarding in that way," he said. Attendees of the annual meet- ing will be able to find the 2016 OPS Scientific Exhibit prominently located in the Exhibit Hall, Hall D of the convention center. Mr. Rostvold said it usually draws a crowd. "Part of it is art appreciation— to see how an image is captured, to appreciate the image and the quality of the image," he said. Viewers can learn from the photographs as well. "[Viewers can] analyze and critique the technique that was used to acquire the image, potentially learn from that tech- nique," Mr. Rostvold said. "But I think for most ophthalmologists, they just enjoy seeing the quality images. … It's their field, it's their interest, and for them to be able to see images, they can appreciate it as they're looking through the slit lamp or when they're doing their exam." In addition to being featured at the meeting, winners will be men- tioned in the Final Program and, as in past years, will appear in the Journal of Ophthalmic Photography.
