Cornea Society News – published quarterly by the Cornea Society 6 Cornea Society presents 2016 Fellowship Educational Summit Surgeon preferences regarding the ordering of donor corneas survey announced E very year, a significant number of corneas released for transplanta- tion ends up expiring because of the inability to place them. This represents a waste of time and money for eye banks, a disappoint- ment for donor families, and a loss of opportunity for international locations needing tissue. There are multiple studies in the literature trying to identify donor- related factors associated with graft failure but with varying conclusions. Each surgeon develops his own preferences about donor parameters he will accept. A recent study by Lass et al showed that 58% would cancel a scheduled case if the cornea donor did not meet his/her specified range of parameters even if it met the local eye bank's standards. Maya Bitar, MD, cornea fellow at the University of North Carolina and at Miracles in Sight (North Carolina Eye Bank) is conducting a study to help eye banks tailor their recovery process and management of tissues through a better knowledge of U.S. surgeons' criteria for ordering corneas for transplantation. A short anonymous survey was developed on Survey- Monkey. It includes questions regarding criteria for accepting corneal tis- sue for transplantation like donor age, endothelial cell density, thickness of graft for Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty, etc. Please take a moment to go online and complete the survey as your input is important: www.surveymonkey.com/r/9F2W6SH. T he Cornea Society is pleased to present the 2016 Fellowship Educational Summit for current cornea fellows in Tampa, Florida on September 15–18. The program directors, Kathryn Colby, MD, PhD, Deepinder Dhaliwal, MD, and Shahzad Mian, MD, have assembled a distinguished faculty of dynamic speakers to address advanced concepts in anterior segment surgery and medical management of cornea and external diseases. The faculty members are Anthony Aldave, MD, Jessica Ciralsky, MD, Bennie Jeng, MD, W. Barry Lee, MD, Marian Macsai, MD, and Greg Ogawa, MD. Fellows will be introduced to the use and interpretation of anterior segment imaging tools ranging from corneal topography to anterior segment OCT and UBM. Practical applications of these skills will be put to the test and will cover basic and advanced concepts in surface ablation and LASIK. Common and uncommon diseases of the ocular surface including advanced dry eye will be discussed, and there will be a review of corneal considerations in cataract surgery and the management of corneal trauma. All aspects of complex cataract surgery, IOL management, and premium IOLs will be addressed as well. This year, the number of program participants is limited to 50, and the re- sponse has been tremendous in previous years. Registration for the 2-day program will open in late June. Please visit fel- lows.corneasociety.org for further details. CN
