Cornea Society News – published quarterly by the Cornea Society 4 "Trending Now" symposium to touch on hot topics in cornea T his year's "Trending Now: What's Hot" symposium at the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress will be cosponsored by ASCRS and the Cornea Society and will cover some of the best new technologies and treatments for eye diseases. Anthony Aldave, MD, chief of the cornea and uveitis division, Jules Stein Eye Institute, Los Angeles, will serve as one of the moderators of the session, along with Marian Macsai, MD, Glenview, Illinois, Cornea Society president. "Attendees will learn about new diagnostic tests and medical and surgical treatments for common eye problems that comprehensive and anterior seg- ment specialists encounter on a daily basis," Dr. Aldave said. The tips, tech- niques, and tests that the speakers will discuss will improve the ability of both comprehensive ophthalmologists and anterior segment specialists to diagnose and manage a variety of anterior seg- ment disorders, he said. "The diagnostic tests and medical and surgical treatments that were chosen to be discussed during this symposium are those that are relatively new, and thus those with which the attendees may not be familiar," he said. "In addi- tion, many of the tests and treatments are in evolution in terms of the indica- tions and technique; the speakers will present advances in these areas." One of the most anticipated tech- nologies in the U.S. is corneal collagen crosslinking for keratoconus and ectasia following keratorefractive surgery, Dr. Aldave said. During the session, Roy Rubinfeld, MD, Chevy Chase, Maryland, who has performed corne- al collagen crosslinking for years, will provide a much anticipated update on the ongoing questions and debate about "epi-on vs. epi-off" based on indepen- dent lab studies and newly available long-term clinical results. Other topics that will be discussed in the session include an update on tissue sealants, an update on corneal ectasia surgical techniques, an update on infectious keratitis management, point- of-care dry eye tests and treatments, new surgical techniques of limbal stem cell deficiency, and a look at what's new in endothelial keratoplasty. The sympo- sium will take place on Sunday, May 8, from 8:00–9:30 a.m. in room 243. CN Editors' note: Dr. Aldave has no financial interests related to his comments.
