EW NEWS & OPINION April 2016 21 subjects covered included advanced phacoemulsification techniques, astigmatism management, toric and multifocal IOLs, and MIGS. So much has been written about how millennials and specifically millennial ophthalmologists are dif- ferent. While I agree there are differ- ences, I think there are more similar- ities in the most important virtues. Fundamental dedication to patient care, the importance of vision, mak- ing the future world a better place, and being part of a collaborative and appreciative community like ASCRS are important to all generations of practicing ophthalmologists. By every standard, the meeting was a success, complete with social media interaction from the attendees. From my perspective, I gained a new appreciation of millennial oph- thalmologists in training. Of course they texted, drank energy drinks, and took selfies, but they also partic- ipated with a strong sense of interest and optimism. The future of oph- thalmology is in good hands. EW Contact information Donnenfeld: ericdonnenfeld@gmail.com around them. As my son has helped show me, millennials challenge con- vention and look for better ways to do things. They are optimistic, prag- matic idealists who are quite likely to develop new apps to change the way we do routine tasks. In early March, ASCRS held its Young Eye Surgeons (YES) Advanced Cataract Training (ACT) meeting in New York. The YES ACT meeting is organized by the YES Clinical Com- mittee chairperson, Elizabeth Yeu, MD, and features some of the best young and senior ophthalmologists ASCRS has to offer with collabora- tion from 20 ophthalmic residency programs. The meeting featured in-depth educational offerings to in- crease exposure to advanced cataract training for ophthalmology resi- dents, fellows, and surgeons in their first 5 years of practice. The inten- sive educational program included didactic/video case presentations, a hands-on wet lab with phacoemulsi- fication devices from Abbott Medical Optics (Abbott Park, Illinois), Alcon (Fort Worth, Texas), and Bausch + Lomb (Bridgewater, New Jersey), femtosecond lasers, and roundtable discussion breakout sessions.
