EW MEETING REPORTER 168 April 2016 Reporting from the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress 2016, March 24–27, Taipei, Taiwan delivery, he said. However, CCCs can be successfully cut (with occa- sional double rings), and nuclei is successfully divided with this laser, he said. The Ziemer laser is much smaller in footprint than any of the other platforms, and you can move it from OR to OR, he said. Dr. Yeoh said he is always asked which platform is best. Looking at all the lasers on the market, he said the LenSx is probably the most dominant, with around 1,000 units installed worldwide. One factor to consider when deciding whether or not to use the femtosecond laser is how it fits in your practice. Linda Tsai, MD, St. Louis, Missouri, discussed this topic, based on a practice in the U.S. In Femtosecond cataract surgery consists of both the femto step and the phaco step. "The femto step includes docking, planning, and lasering," he said. While many of the femto laser platforms had initial issues with ergonomics and docking, these problems have been rectified with time, Dr. Yeoh said, and he thinks that all the femtosecond laser machines have improved over the last 4 years. The Ziemer laser was introduced later than the other 4 femto plat- forms, Dr. Yeoh said, so surgeons using this laser may still encounter some issues. For example, docking is more challenging, equipment is significantly heavier, and the equipment vibrates during laser Femtosecond cataract surgery Femtosecond cataract surgery remains a hot topic around the world, with surgeons gaining more experience with the different laser platforms. Ronald Yeoh, MD, Singapore, discussed the different femto laser cataract platforms available in Sin- gapore. He highlighted 4 platforms, the Catalys (Abbott Medical Optics, Abbott Park, Illinois), LenSx (Alcon, Fort Worth, Texas), Victus (Bausch + Lomb, Bridgewater, New Jersey), and Ziemer Z8 (Ziemer, Port, Switzer- land). All of these have been avail- able in Singapore for several years, he said, except for the Ziemer, which just became available in Singapore at the end of last year. Reporting from APAO 2016
