The 1850 House 523 St. Ann St. 504-568-6968 www.louisianastatemuseum.org/ museums/1850-house This historic site is part of the Louisiana State Museum and is an antebellum house set to look as though it would have in the 19th century. It was conceived by Baroness Pontalba and is part of the Pontalba buildings, which are a number of row houses in the area that were built in 1850. This house was opened to the public in 1948. The 1850 House is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Adult admission is $3. The Edgar Degas House 2306 Esplanade Ave. 504-821-5009 www.degashouse.com This historic house is also a bed and breakfast in honor of the French im- pressionist Edgar Degas. Take a tour of the house, which includes some of the artist's New Orleans paintings, as well as drawings and letters. Tours also include discussions of Degas and his family, viewings of the house and studio, and a documenta- ry. Tours are $29 per person and are just over 2 hours, beginning at 10:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. The house is advertised as the only home of Degas that is open to the public. Museums Confederate Memorial Hall Museum 929 Camp St. 504-523-4522 www.confederatemuseum.com For those interested in U.S. histo- ry, this museum boasts one of the largest collections of Confederate artifacts, including weapons, uni- forms, personal items, and flags, as well as some special exhibits. It was built in the late 1800s and is located in the New Orleans Warehouse Arts District. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Adult admission is $8. Longue Vue House and Gardens 7 Bamboo Rd. 504-488-5488 www.longuevue.com Built over a 3-year period from 1939 to 1942, the Longue Vue House was created by Edgar and Edith Stern, working with architects William and Geoffrey Platt and landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman. Those touring the home will get to see its many rooms, including a "Blue Room," art gallery, and rooms dedicated to flower arranging and wrapping. Tour the house and gardens Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Historic homes Beauregard-Keyes House 1113 Chartres St. 504-523-7257 www.bkhouse.org Originally designed by architect Francois Correjolles, the Beauregard- Keyes House was completed in 1826. Features of the house include a par- lor, ballroom, and gardens, and visi- tors to the house can see collections of antique dolls, veilleuses, and fans. The house is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Adult admission is $10, and the house also offers guided tours. You won't want to miss the chance to see these attractions while you're in New Orleans Audubon Nature Institute Audubon Aquarium of the Americas 1 Canal St. 504-565-3033 www.auduboninstitute.org Open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the aquari- um has something for everyone. See a variety of fish, coral, and sea life, or you can enjoy the penguin ex- hibit or a hands-on experience with parakeets. Tickets start at $23.95 for adult general admission. Audubon Insectarium 423 Canal St. 504-524-2847 www.auduboninstitute.org While visiting the many offerings of the Audubon Nature Institute, don't miss the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium. The Butterfly Garden features hundreds of butterflies in a free-flight area. Other exhibits focus on cockroaches, a praying mantis, and bugs specific to the wetlands of Louisiana. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., admission is $16.95 for adults. Audubon Zoo 6500 Magazine St. 504-861-2537 www.auduboninstitute.org Come and check out the wildlife at the Audubon Zoo. The site has had animals since 1884 at the World Exposition in Audubon Park. The zoo spans 58 acres and features ele- phants, bears, birds, and many other animals and exciting exhibits. Gen- eral admission tickets start at $18.95 for adults, or you can choose from a variety of package and combination offers.
