EW IN OTHER NEWS 106 February 2016 Discussing ophthalmology during off-hours? The Prices said that it is often dif- ficult to set work aside when you work with your spouse, but they try to schedule time away from the office and enjoy taking their family canoeing in the Canadian Quetico National Park. "We also travel to interesting locations for eye meet- ings," they said. "We are truly blessed to be able to work together doing things we enjoy and that help people local- ly and internationally," they said. "More importantly, we are blessed with a loving family." "Donations from cornea transplant recipients and the funding we receive from industry-sponsored studies helps support our cornea transplant work," they said. When deciding which topics to pursue, they look for problems that need a solution and design and conduct studies to address that prob- lem, often without any government or corporate funding. "We have developed the largest database on corneal transplants in the Western Hemisphere," they said. By tracking the outcomes of thousands of transplants, they determined that the new DMEK transplants have a much lower rate of rejection than previous DSEK or PK transplants. "This led us to design studies to investigate how far we could reduce steroid dosing with- out increasing transplant rejection." They also identified previous glau- coma surgery as the most significant risk factor for transplant failure, so they have been doing further studies to determine why that is and what can be done to improve graft survival in these eyes. "We tag team our roles for designing, vetting, and setting up studies based on each of our areas of expertise."
