World view Put a happy face on your patients I n this issue of EyeWorld, we explore the topic of patient satisfaction in depth. There are many factors physicians must consider to ensure that they are getting the best out- comes for their patients and that patients are ultimately satisfied with the procedure. Patient satisfaction can play a major role in assessing outcomes. Fuxiang Zhang, MD, and Randall J. Olson, MD, discuss this in a clinical context, focusing on how different IOL types may impact patient satisfaction and the impor- tance of patient questionnaires in collecting and using information about the patient experience to better the practice. Patient education also factors in. Specifically, physicians must be careful to discuss and adequately prepare the patient for upcoming procedures. Jorge L. Alio, MD, PhD, Damien Gatinel, MD, PhD, and George O. Waring IV, MD, share how they talk to patients prior to surgery and how they adapt their approach depending on the procedure being performed. When it comes to satisfaction, premium IOLs often deserve special con- sideration. Samuel Masket, MD, Marian Macsai, MD, and John Berdahl, MD, highlight how they handle the unhappy premium IOL patient. It is important to let the patient know that you care and will help fix the issue, and ask questions to get to the root of the problem. Finally, with patient satisfaction, there will be both objective and sub- jective complaints, and physicians should be prepared to deal with both. Dr. Alio, Michael Lawless, MD, Guy M. Kezirian, MD, and Alois K. Dexl, MD, discuss the tests they use to measure outcomes. Many new technologies are aiding in tracking these outcomes. We hope you find this issue of EyeWorld useful in your practice. Thank you for reading!
