EW CATARACT 33 November 2015 by Ellen Stodola EyeWorld Staff Writer Results of the study were discussed at the recent ESCRS meeting D uring the 2015 European Society of Cataract & Re- fractive Surgeons (ESCRS) meeting in Barcelona, Peter Barry, MD, Dublin, Ireland, discussed whether or not the femtosecond laser can outper- form phaco, detailing the results of the ESCRS femtosecond laser-assist- ed cataract surgery (FLACS) study. The study was done by self-selected surgeons, with patients chosen by the surgeons (consecutive cases were submitted). The FLACS patients were entered prospectively into the European Registry of Quality Outcomes for Cataract and Refrac- tive Surgery (EUREQUO) database, and the controls were matched retrospectively from the EUREQUO patients entered in 2014. Recruitment for the study took place from December 2013 through the end of May 2015 to include 3,379 patients at 16 centers in 10 countries. Countries included Australia, Germany, the Nether- lands, the U.K., Belgium, Hungary, Spain, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Turkey. Patients were matched for the same preoperative visual acuity and the same age (plus or minus 2 years), as well as the same score for anticipated surgical difficulty. There were a total of 2,814 matched femto patients (565 could not be matched based on the age and visual acuity requirements). In both the femto and phaco groups, surgeons had little preoper- ative surgical difficulty. In the femto group 91.9% had no difficulty, and Update on the ESCRS FLACS study DRY EYE NEVER FELT SO GOOD.
