World view Highlights from World Cornea Congress VII E very 5 years, the international corneal community meets to share the exciting advancements and updates in clinical practice and research at the World Cor- nea Congress (WCC). The first WCC was held in Washington, DC in 1964, and the most recent meeting was in April 2015 in San Diego just before the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress. This issue of EyeWorld is packed full of highlights from the WCC 2015 meeting and unparalleled contributions from international corneal experts. From the "Dystrophies, Degenerations, and Genetics" session, Ken Nischal, MD, delves into the challenging area of congenital corneal opacities and the importance of developing an international consensus for precise terminology in order to better classify diseases and to determine the best management strategies. Jayne Weiss, MD, provides an update on the new International Committee for Classification of Corneal Dystrophies (IC3D) 2nd Edition, exploring recent advances in DNA sequencing and pathology techniques to better understand the genetic and cellular origins of corneal dystrophies. Anthony Aldave, MD, presents several cases to illustrate the importance of genetic testing for certain patients prior to refractive surgery. Ocular surface disease is the basis for some of the most difficult patients in ophthalmology. Anat Galor, MD, reviews pearls for treating dry eye and blepharitis. Kristin Hammersmith, MD, touches on neuropathic ocular pain. Jose de la Cruz, MD, explains how blepharokeratoconjunctivitis is an under recognized condition in children. Deborah Jacobs, MD, introduces some experimental therapies for dry eyes, and Ali Djalilian, MD, describes treatment options for patients with limbal stem cell deficiency. Herpes zoster ophthalmicus can cause a myriad of ocular problems, especially involving the cornea. Elisabeth Cohen, MD, Jay Pepose, MD, Bryan Lee, MD, and myself discuss the corneal findings in HZO, chronic sequelae, treatment strategies, and the role of the Shingles vaccine. From the WCC session focusing on keratoconus, ectasias, and lamellar surgeries, David Rootman, MD, and Luigi Fontana, MD, discuss challenges of performing deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) and techniques to manage intraoperative tears and perforations. Paolo Vinciguerra, MD, shares his guidelines for determining optimal crosslinking protocols for patients with keratoconus and other forms of ectasia. Finally, Karin Thomas, MD, Anisa Gire, OD, and Perry Rosenthal, MD, provide expertise from the "Corneal Tissue Engineering and Wound Healing" session of WCC. A collagen substitute biosynthetic material with no risk for rejection is introduced, as is the use of scleral contact lenses for a variety of conditions including ocular neuropathic pain syndrome. We hope you enjoy this issue of EyeWorld with these WCC highlights, and thank you to all the physicians above for taking the time to share their expertise.
