poaching, she said. It has public
education and handles indigenous
people well. One of the main goals
is for the people to stay connected
with the land, and as a result, people
are trained to be trackers and guides,
which Dr. Arbisser found fascinat-
ing. "The animals are accustomed to
being observed without interaction
so it is as though one were wearing
an invisibility cloak, allowing up-
close photography," she said.
"Beyond that, the people who
were our guides were so extraordi-
nary. They knew the environment
so well that they knew if there's one
bump out of place it was a baboon
in a tree a mile away. They knew
that if a giraffe is standing complete-
ly still that likely meant that local
cheetahs were out hunting."
At night while touring in a Jeep
with just a moving light to explore
the area, their guide found a chame-
leon in a tree. "We couldn't believe
it because it was so subtle and im-
possible to see with the naked eye,"
Dr. Arbisser said. The group joked
that Baruti, the guide, had plant-
ed the chameleon there because it
seemed so impossible to spot this
small animal in such a large area,
and this experience prompted the

for the book, and why she enjoys
writing.
The story and inspiration
The inspiration for this particular
story, Dr. Arbisser said, was the
desire to share a part of the trip with
her children and grandchildren.
The book was a collaboration
among Dr. Arbisser, her husband,
and an optometrist colleague,
Glenn Darlington, and his wife,
Kay, who were also on the trip.
"We found Botswana to be an
amazing and magical place," Dr.
Arbisser said. The country has no
