World view Topics in keratorefractive surgery I n this issue of EyeWorld, a number of mod- ern, relevant topics in keratorefractive sur- gery will be discussed. We are at an exciting point in refractive surgery; in the next 12 months, we will have a variety of new tech- nologies in our toolboxes. In the 2015 ASCRS Clinical Survey, 37% of respondents indicated that they expect more than 10% growth in their annual laser vision correction procedure volumes in the next year. Patient satisfaction is one im- portant piece of this. In fact, 43% of respondents to the ASCRS Clinical Survey indicated that they are using patient satisfaction ratings as a way to determine successful laser vision correction outcomes in their practice. One area that is seeing a lot of innovation this year is the modern LASIK procedure. Peter McDonnell, MD, Stephen Coleman, MD, and Arthur Cummings, MD, discuss safety, efficacy, and study results of the FDA PROWL studies, which assessed patient satisfaction with wavefront-guided and wavefront-optimized ablations. Evolving approaches to the procedure may help increase the enthusiasm of physicians and patients alike. Refractive lens exchange is an important topic to consider in the context of the refractive cataract practice. Richard Hoffman, MD, and John Berdahl, MD, discuss how they think this fits into a practice, as well as techniques they use to manage unhappy refractive patients. Achieving the best refractive outcome possible for all patients is the goal of refractive surgeons. Christopher Blanton, MD, Charles Reilly, MD, and Daniel Durrie, MD, discuss the targets that surgeons should aim for and what to do when you don't hit that target. Finally, Coleman Kraff, MD, Scott MacRae, MD, and Douglas Koch, MD, highlight some of the emerging options in the larger realm of refractive treatment. Small incision lenticule extraction, collagen crosslinking, corneal inlays, and advanced diagnostics have exciting potential, and the physicians will discuss options as well as limitations. Thank you to all of the experts who contributed to this issue of EyeWorld.
