OPHTHALMOLOGY BUSINESS 74 August 2015 task taken over by a "quality assur- ance" or similar standing commit- tee. The minimum frequency for provider performance reviews is an- nually, and this is just fine for part- ner-level doctors, who are less likely to need any corrective fine-tuning. For durable associates, and especially for associates on a partner-track, a semi-annual review is indicated. The format of review instru- ments and support materials can be very much the same for associates and partners, for ODs and MDs/DOs, with the obvious distinctions. Adverse reviews should always conclude with a corrective action plan. Improvement plans should be specific and actionable and time sensitive. Not: "Do the best you can to control your anger in front of patients and staff." Rather: "Complete anger management training with ABC Associates no later than December 15; realize that failure to complete this training and to avoid material patient or staff complaints for a 12-month period will be grounds for termination." Of course, even the most delightful and skilled providers can still use a few coaching points. Indeed, they probably became re- markable because they were non-de- fensive and good at taking and using feedback.
