EW CATARACT 22 Cataract editor's corner of the world I t is hard to believe that it has been 4 years since I was given the honor of serving as the cataract editor for EyeWorld. At that time, our fearless leader, David Chang, MD, had taken over as the chief medical editor and was revamping the magazine. With his Midas touch, he successfully transformed EyeWorld into the premier trade publication, blossoming into numerous countries and introducing unique columns about resident teaching, case management, expert advice, and specialized techniques. In these 4 years, we have seen dramatic changes in the field of cataract surgery, such as the introduction of femto laser-assisted cataract surgery and intra- operative aberrometry. We have followed the changes in perioperative management with an increase in the use of intracameral antibiotics, decrease in utilization of injected anesthetic blocks, and variable uses of brand versus generic medications. We have followed the outcomes of presbyopia- and astigmatism-correcting IOLs and associated introductions of new IOL power formulas, new variables regarding posterior corneal astigmatism, and new diagnostic technol- ogies. I've had the pleasure of working with a talented cataract editorial board that has included many people and now consists of Lisa B. Arbisser, MD, Susan MacDonald, MD, Saraswathy Ramanathan, MD, Steven G. Safran, MD, Richard Tipperman, MD, Mitchell Weikert, MD, and Rosa Braga-Mele, MD. These individuals helped develop the various topics, identify the experts, and facilitate the article development. All of this could not be possible without the hard work of the entire EyeWorld staff, including Donald Long, Erin Boyle, Stacy Majewicz, Cathy Stern, Julio Guerrero, Susan Steury, Carly Peterson, Ellen Stodola, Lauren Lipuma, and the many contributing writers, as well as the entire support staff behind the scenes. It is with great pleasure that I pass along the cataract editor baton to Dr. Braga-Mele. She is a well-respected leader in the field of cataract surgery who brings a fresh perspective. Along with the editorial board and new chief medical editor, Eric Donnenfeld, MD, this new team is perfectly equipped to elevate the publication to the next level. I am looking forward to learning from this talented group. Bonnie An Henderson, MD, cataract editor by Rosa Braga-Mele, MD cataract surgery. We are all learning new things together, and the faster we can disseminate accurate in- formation, the easier it is for us to transition and learn. This is a truly evolving field with new studies emerging everyday, and the tech- nology is rapidly changing to suit the needs of the surgeon. There are also new advances in IOL technol- ogy in the U.S. and abroad, and I hope to ensure that our readership is aware of what choices are available for our patients. New advances are occurring in NSAID treatment and delivery for cataract surgery and an- ti-infective prophylaxis and delivery. Other advancing topics include new diagnostic technology either in the office or in the operating room, and how best to utilize these to our and our patients' advantage. The recent ASCRS Clinical Surveys have shown us areas that require education, and my hope is to elaborate and educate in these areas. I would like to encourage reader in- volvement with ideas on areas they would like to see covered. I would also like to use the magazine to showcase innovative presentations or symposia from the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress so that those who cannot attend have the chance to read about it in the publi- cation. It is important to always pro- vide our readers with the ability to learn from the "experts," especially for new or inventive ways to tackle challenging cataract cases. I am very excited to take over the reins from Bonnie, who has done a fantastic job. I am looking forward to the continued success of this magazine, specifically as it pertains to cutting-edge and inno- vative techniques and technology in cataract surgery, and to working with Eric Donnenfeld, MD, as chief medical editor, and the team at EyeWorld. EW Contact information Braga-Mele: rbragamele@rogers.com governing board and the program committee, and served for the past 4 years as chair of the Cataract Clinical Committee. My hope is to provide you, the reader, with up-to-date information on cutting-edge techniques and technology in cataract surgery. It is truly an exciting time in cataract surgery with new phacoemulsifi- cation technology emerging, as well as the introduction and accep- tance of femtosecond laser-assisted A SCRS was originally devel- oped to foster innovation and creative thinking, and provide a safe place for discourse as it per- tained to cataract surgery. EyeWorld continues to foster that edict. I am very honored to have been asked to succeed Bonnie An Henderson, MD, as cataract section editor for EyeWorld. Bonnie, along with her cataract board and under the guid- ance of chief medical editor, David Chang, MD, has truly made this publication a wealth of knowledge for cataract surgeons. I will definite- ly have big shoes to fill. I bring my experience as a com- prehensive ophthalmologist with a special interest in cataract surgery, challenging cataract surgery, and re- fractive cataract surgery to the role. I am an educator and a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Toronto in Canada, but also have a private practice. I have been an active member of ASCRS for the last 17 years. I've participated on the April 2015 Transition in EyeWorld cataract editor Rosa Braga-Mele, MD " My hope is to provide you, the reader, with up-to-date information on cutting-edge techniques and technology in cataract surgery.
