13 EW NEWS & OPINION March 2015 The 2015 ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress will be held at the San Diego Convention Center. Following the Science and Med- icine Lecture, Dr. Holland will mod- erate "60 Minutes: Controversies in Anterior Segment Surgery," which will feature discussions on contro- versial topics that will be debated by the ASCRS Young Eye Surgeons (YES) Committee. The Innovators Session, taking place on Monday, April 20, from 10:00–11:30 a.m., will feature 5 innovative talks leading up the Charles D. Kelman Innovator's Lecture. Shigeru Kinoshita, MD, PhD, Kyoto, Japan, will deliver this year's lecture, titled "Novel Treatment Dimensions for Corneal Endothelial Dysfunction." The final general session, "Hot Off the Press: Highlights of the 2015 Symposium" will take place on Tues- day, April 21 from 3:00–4:30 p.m. David F. Chang, MD, Los Altos, Calif., will moderate the session, which will feature panel discussions highlighting and debating the best papers of the meeting. Special events The ASOA Opening General Session will take place from 8:30–10:30 a.m. on Saturday, featuring a keynote address by mountaineer and global adventurer Paul Deegan. Mr. Deegan has led teams on many challenging expeditions, including to Mount Everest, and unexplored ranges in the Central Asian mountains. In this engaging session, Mr. Deegan will explain his philosophy for invisible leadership, teaching attendees how to overcome self-doubt and reduce the fear of failure. The Residents and Fellows Program returns this year, complete with courses and networking events designed specifically for residents and fellows. The half-day meeting will take place on Saturday, April 18 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The program aims to provide residents and fellows with the necessary tools to successfully enter practice, includ- ing information on private versus academic practice, contract negotia- tion, and how to avoid lawsuits. The ASCRS Hall of Fame and the Ophthalmic Photographers' Society (OPS) Exhibits also return this year. The exhibits will be open from Saturday, April 18 to Monday, April 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday, April 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The OPS exhibit will showcase first place, second place, third place, and honorable mention winning photographs in 18 categories, and a "Best in Show" photograph. The 33rd ASCRS Film Festival reception and awards will take place on Monday from 4:30–6:30 p.m., and final film screenings will take place on Tuesday, April 21 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Symposia highlights The 2015 program will feature several symposia that will provide a broader view of ophthalmology and medical practice in the U.S. On Sunday, April 19 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., ASCRS will present "Current Hot FDA Topics: Update on Drug Compounding and 21st Century Cures Initiative." The first part of the session will focus on ophthalmological issues related to the reenactment of the Drug Quality and Security Act, such as use of compounded drugs and continued access to repackaged drugs. The second part of the session will focus on the 21st Century Cures Initiative, which is investigating how to accelerate the pace of cures and medical breakthroughs in the U.S., and what steps can be taken to ensure that the drug and device approval process fosters innovation. Panelists will review how the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plans to address the concerns raised through the Initiative. Also on Sunday, ASCRS and ASOA will present a joint sympo- sium titled "Creating the Dream Team: The Secrets of Successful Leadership," which will take place from 1:00–2:30 p.m. The sympo- sium will feature a panel of physi- cians and administrators who will discuss different leadership models that can be used to create an en- vironment of inspiration, dedica- tion, and enthusiasm in a medical practice.
