EW MEETING REPORTER 108 byline goes here plus fade H awaiian Eye 2015 kicked off with a CME breakfast seminar about ocular sur- face disease in the surgical setting. Moderated by Eric Donnenfeld, MD, New York, with Edward Holland, MD, Cin- cinnati, and John Sheppard, MD, Richmond, Va., the seminar looked at recognition and treatment of this issue. Dr. Holland discussed the diag- nosis of dry eye and what's new in 2015. Patients with ocular surface problems can present with a variety of symptoms, and tests are general- ly subjective, he said. Tests for dry eye include Schirmer's testing, tear breakup time (TBUT), staining, and tear meniscus height. There are also advanced diag- nostic modalities that could improve the diagnosis of dry eye. These tests include osmolarity, MMP-9 inflam- matory marker testing, serum test- ing, the Sjö blood test for Sjögren's syndrome (Nicox, Sophia Antipolis, France), lipid layer analysis, and OCT. These advanced diagnostics are helping to improve both the sensitivity and specificity of dry eye testing, Dr. Holland said. "All of these are going to give us a much more accurate way to diagnose," he said. New advanced tests increase the specificity and positive predictive value (PPV) of diagnostic testing for dry eye, Dr. Holland conclud- ed. Point-of-care diagnostic testing allows the physician to make appropriate treatment decisions more quickly. Editors' note: Dr. Holland has financial interests with Alcon (Fort Worth, Texas), Allergan (Irvine, Calif.), Bausch + Lomb (Bridgewater, N.J.), Katena (Denville, N.J.), Kala Pharmaceuticals (Waltham, Mass.), Mimetogen (Gloucester, Mass.), Oculeve (San Francisco), TearLab (San Diego), TearScience (Morrisville, N.C.), and Senju (Osaka, Japan). Examining the changing ophthalmic practice environment A session dedicated to ophthalmic practice looked at issues for the new year and included a presentation on compliance. Kevin Corcoran, COE, president of Corcoran Consulting Group, San Bernardino, Calif., discussed "What's New in 2015." His talk covered topics such as payment issues, new codes, regulatory matters, adminis- trative changes, incentive programs, and utilization changes.
