accommodation, and fixation instability. Photophobia and dry eye disease associated with neu- rotrauma have also been reported, Dr. Cockerham said. Even when eyes do not exhibit obvious injury, blast victims often report having reduced visual quality. Col. Raymond Cho, MD, Bethesda, Md., recounted the events that led to Mr. Woodruff's injury and the subsequent medical response that saved his life. On Jan. 29, 2006, Mr. Woodruff and 3 crewmembers from ABC News were reporting on American and Iraqi security forces in Baghdad. They were participating in an Iraqi patrol when an improvised roadside bomb exploded, severely injuring Mr. Woodruff and cameraman Doug Vogt. Mr. Woodruff and Mr. Vogt were flown to the closest hospital, where Mr. Woodruff underwent extensive surgery to remove shrapnel embed- ded in his parietal and temporal lobes. He was placed in a medically induced coma after his surgery and was not expected to survive. Mr. Woodruff beat the odds, however, and woke up from the coma after 36 days. Mr. Woodruff experienced multiple visual defects as a result of his injuries, including right hom- onymous superior quadrantanopia, but his brain has adapted during the recovery process and many of his visual defects have symptomatical- ly resolved. Mr. Woodruff rejoined ABC news and resumed reporting in 2007, a mere 13 months after his devastating injury. Courtesy of sev- eral exhibitors at this AAO annual meeting, Mr. Woodruff underwent visual field testing and spectral domain OCT, which will be used as a baseline to monitor his progress in the years to come. Olson, MD, Salt Lake City, shared ways that clinicians can solve existing controversies over surgical methods when he presented the Charles D. Kelman Lecture, "Entrepreneurship in Clinical Research," during the "Spotlight on Cataracts" session. Dr. Olson said objective research could be used to deter- mine if new technologies are true advances or pure marketing hype and if one surgical method is superior to another.
