A SCRS•ASOA is sponsoring the 2014 Combined Oph- thalmology Symposium: Treatments, Techniques, and Technology for the Integrated Anterior Segment Practice, taking place August 22–24 in San Antonio, Texas. The two-and- a-half day program will focus on the surgical aspects of anterior segment practice, including cataract/ IOL, refractive, glaucoma and corneal surgeries. The meeting was formerly known as the Ophthalmology Symposium. "Our plans are focused on pro- ducing a meeting that satisfies all of the needs of our attendees and will inspire them to use this information when they return to their practice," said Mitch Weikert, MD, associate professor and residency program director, Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston. Dr. Weikert and Douglas Koch, MD, professor and Allen, Mosbacher, and Law chair in ophthalmology, Baylor College of Medicine, will chair the physicians program. Drs. Weikert and Koch se- lected faculty who will offer an array of knowledge and includes physi- cians from ASCRS' Clinical Commit- tees and Baylor College of Medicine. They include Gary Foster, MD, Fort Collins, Colo.; Sumit Garg, MD, Irvine, Calif.; M. Bose Hamill, MD, Houston; Sumitra Khandelwal, MD, Houston; W. Barry Lee, MD, Atlanta; Irving M. Raber, MD, Bala Cynwyd, Pa.; Charles D. Reilly, MD, San Antonio; Jonathan B. Rubenstein, MD, Chicago; Steve Schallhorn, MD, San Diego; and Elizabeth Yeu, MD, Norfolk, Va. "Our faculty will provide a diversity of perspectives on a wide range of topics of immediate clinical value to the anterior segment surgeon. Our interactive, fast-paced format keeps it lively and allows us to cover a lot of material," Dr. Koch said. The meeting will offer educa- tional opportunities for the entire ophthalmic team, including concur- rent tracks for ophthalmologists, practice administrators and staff, optometrists, and nurses and technicians. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn the latest techniques in anterior segment surgery and reinforce fundamentals of the procedures that they use regularly. INDICATIONS: The AcrySof ® IQ ReSTOR ® Posterior Chamber Intraocular Lens (IOL) is intended for primary implantation for the visual correction of aphakia second- ary to removal of a cataractous lens in adult patients with and without presby- opia, who desire near, intermediate and distance vision with increased spectacle independence. The lens is intended to be placed in the capsular bag. WARNING/PRECAUTION: Careful pre- operative evaluation and sound clinical judgment should be used by the surgeon to decide the risk/benefit ratio before im- planting a lens in a patient with any of the conditions described in the Directions for Use labeling. Physicians should target emmetropia, and ensure that IOL centra- tion is achieved. Care should be taken to remove viscoelastic from the eye at the close of surgery. Some patients may experience visual dis- turbances and/or discomfort due to mul- tifocality, especially under dim light con- ditions. Clinical studies with the AcrySof ® ReSTOR ® lens indicated that posterior capsule opacification (PCO), when pres- ent, developed earlier into clinically sig- nificant PCO. Prior to surgery, physicians should provide prospective patients with a copy of the Patient Information Bro- chure available from Alcon for this prod- uct informing them of possible risks and benefits associated with the AcrySof ® IQ ReSTOR ® IOLs. Studies have shown that color vision discrimination is not adversely affected in individuals with the AcrySof ® Natural IOL and normal color vision. The effect on vision of the AcrySof ® Natural IOL in subjects with hereditary color vision de- fects and acquired color vision defects secondary to ocular disease (e.g., glauco- ma, diabetic retinopathy, chronic uveitis, and other retinal or optic nerve diseases) has not been studied. Do not resterilize; do not store over 45° C; use only sterile irrigating solutions such as BSS ® or BSS PLUS ® Sterile Intraocular Irrigating Solu- tions. ATTENTION: Reference the Directions for Use labeling for a complete listing of indi- cations, warnings and precautions. www.AcrySofReSTOR.com 1 4/30/14 2:44 PM Mitch Weikert, MD, co-chair, physicians program Douglas Koch, MD, co-chair, physicians program continued on page 10 "Our faculty will provide a diversity of perspectives on a wide range of topics of immediate clinical value to the anterior segment surgeon.
