Dr. Ellman has de- veloped a hand-held ocular camera called the EyeQuick Digital Ophthal- moscope Camera, which is currently up for FDA approval. "The digital ophthalmoscope was something I thought of when I was a resident," he said. "I couldn't believe in that day and age that no one had developed one yet." Dr. Ellman began developing the device about 5 years ago, shortly after he started his practice. Three engineers and two patents later, the EyeQuick Digital Ophthalmoscope Camera is expected to gain FDA 510(k) clearance this year. "This is the first portable digital version," Dr. Ellman said. "Doctors can carry it into the exam room or take it to the hospital and use it on a patient who is bedbound or on a stretcher." The EyeQuick Digital Ophthal- moscope Camera is held at arm's length and takes pictures and video of the retina and anterior segment. Images can be viewed immediately on its built-in LCD screen, uploaded to a computer or electronic health record, or emailed to another spe- cialist. "Given its portability and great functionality, it fills a niche that's cur- rently void," said Dr. Ellman. Editors' note: Dr. Ellman has finan- cial interests in EyeQuick and state- ments above.
