EW AAO PREVIEW 34 October 2011 the Amsler Grid, and color vision plates. Physician education and ref- erence materials like the Wills Eye Manual is also available in app form, Dr. Shah said. He noted, however, that sur- geons should be very careful about HIPAA laws when putting any pa- tient identification or patient infor- mation on these phones because they are not the best encrypted phones right now. Dr. Shah advised that when tak- ing a clinical picture with the phone, it's a good idea to get a media consent, which is available with the Eye Handbook. Patients can sign with their finger using the phone as a touch pad, and the con- sent can be emailed to the adminis- trator for documentation records. Creating surgical videos for the web Surgeons hoping to pick up some video editing skills can look forward to the skills transfer course by Aaron A. Kuzin, M.D., Northwest Eye Surgeons, Arlington, Wash., titled "Digital Video Editing for the Oph- thalmologist in the YouTube Age." Over the last year or two, said Dr. Kuzin, a lot of patients have been interested in seeing what their surgery is going to be like, and he has had a few patients go on YouTube or iTunes to look at videos to get a better idea of what to ex- pect. His course will be an introduc- tion for those who are just starting to think about doing videos or video editing, he said. Dr. Kuzin will explain the me- chanics of how to capture the videos. For example, for surgery, there is different equipment to use and different formats that they can be captured in, some of which are easier to work with than others. In addition, he will talk about the basic editing of the videos and how to get them into a format that might be useable for talks, educa- tional purposes, and online posting. There will also be a lab portion where the class will go through an exercise using Adobe Premier to edit a video. How long it takes to edit a video depends on what you want to do with it, Dr. Kuzin said. A lot of the new software available makes it rela- tively easy to edit videos. To trans- form a rough edit into a more usable format can be fairly quick, from 30- 45 minutes, he said. For more spe- cialized editing where effects like voiceovers are added to the video, it can take anywhere from a few hours to several days. While Adobe Premier comes in a free trial, it's still a purchased piece of software. There are, however, free editing tools that can do basic video editing, Dr. Kuzin said. A lot of the equipment for recording videos comes with editing tools. Windows and Apple computers come with video editing software Windows Movie Maker and iMovie already built in, although they're not as ver- satile as the more advanced tools. What software is used will depend on what the video is intended for. The course is a good opportu- nity to learn editing not only for surgical videos but also personal videos of celebratory events that are in raw format, said Dr. Kuzin.
