T he end of the year is a special time that invites reflection on what has hap- pened in the past as well as what we have to look forward to. Many of us make resolutions regarding what we will change, what we hope to achieve, or what we will learn to do differently. The December issue of EyeWorld previews some of the newest devices and technologies that are shaping the options we have to offer to our patients. The hopes and aspirations of ophthalmologists around the world are the same. We all want to offer the best possible care, the best technology, and the best opportunity to restore functional vision to those in need. As you formulate your own goals for the coming year, we invite you to take a moment to read this, the final EyeWorld issue of 2011. See if you agree with what we believe repre- sents the advances in eyecare technology that will shape how we practice in 2012. We start with the welcome news that the FDA has approved an im- plantable telescope that addresses one of the most fundamental missions of ophthalmology: to restore useful vision to individuals who have no other options. The device is a new IOL that when coupled with visual re- habilitation training gives hope to advanced AMD patients. Premium IOLs continue to evolve as does our ability to use existing designs even more effectively. New IOL types are gaining favor in Europe, and we look to the experience of our colleagues overseas to enlighten us on IOLs that are not available to patients in the U.S. The technology to ac- curately align toric IOLs is improving as well. In this issue we look into the options available to get the most benefit out of a toric implant. Femtosec- ond-assisted cataract surgery continues to capture the imaginations of sur- geons around the world. Several companies are competing for a piece of the global market, and we report on the progress as well as the promise of this new technology. It is indeed an exciting time for new technology, but this comes at a cost. And what about presbyopia? Is there a way to restore near vision in an aging eye? The baby boomers are looking for an answer. At one large clinic in Japan the use of intracorneal inlays has grown rapidly, and they are now being used in almost a thousand patients a month. In this issue, ex- perts from Japan, Europe, and the U.S. share their firsthand experiences with this exciting technology. From the editors and staff at EyeWorld, we wish you all the best for your holiday season. We hope your New Year is filled with joy, and we thank you for making EyeWorld your trusted source of ophthalmic news and information. John A. Vukich, M.D., international editor Publisher Donald R.
