EW NEWS & OPINION 10 cataract surgery, what the current state of the art is, and what looks promising for the future. He will review the current litera- ture and studies to ascertain what is known about different aspects of vi- sual quality as they relate to patient satisfaction. From this foundation, he will discuss future developments likely to improve the state of the art, as well as what lines of inquiry ap- pear to be missing. Promising tech- nology in the field will also be dis- cussed. In 1975, ASCRS established the Binkhorst Lecture and Medal to honor Cornelius D. Binkhorst for his pioneering work with IOLs. Since then ASCRS has conferred the Binkhorst Medal on an individual whose career has made significant contributions to the science and practice of ophthalmology. Another highlight of the meet- ing is the ASCRS Lecture on Science and Medicine, which will feature Michael T. Osterholm, Ph.D., M.P.H. Dr. Osterholm is an interna- tional leader on issues regarding our preparedness for an influenza pan- demic. He is an expert on the effects of the use of biological agents as cat- astrophic weapons targeting civilian populations. He has published in journals such as Foreign Affairs, New England Journal of Medicine, and Nature, and authored The New York Times best-selling book Living Terrors: What America Needs to Know to Survive the Coming Bioterror- ist Catastrophe. In his address, Dr. Osterholm will detail the effects of a pandemic, man-made or natural, on the health- care and industrial infrastructure as well as its broader societal and polit- ical impact, and what we should be doing to prepare for it. Dr. Osterholm is director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), direc- tor of the NIH-supported Center of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance within CIDRAP, professor in the Division of Environ- mental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, and adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School. As usual, the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress will include a host of courses, papers, films, and posters on managing complications and challenging cases in cataract and refractive surgery, corneal dis- ease, and more.
