C hallenging cataract cases—no matter how experienced we are, they still give us heartburn, and we are continually trying to pick up new tips and skills. This month, EyeWorld seeks expert ad- vice for tackling pseudoexfoliation with weak zonules, traumatic cataracts, and mature lenses. We also consider a common problem that is infrequently discussed—the management of pterygia in cataract surgical patients. Finally, we revisit the problems of IOL selection and cataract surgery in post-keratorefractive patients, which continue to plague us all. This issue nicely illustrates the editorial approach that we've adopted with EyeWorld. Every month we will feature a cover focus of 4-5 articles that explore and discuss different aspects of a clinical theme—in this case, the challenging cataract patient. Under the direction of one of our section edi- tors, the monthly theme allows us to cover a topic in far greater depth than would be possible with an individual article. We have recruited a new edito- rial board, whose members have particular expertise in the areas of cataract, refractive, cornea, and glaucoma. Under the leadership of international sec- tion editor John Vukich, M.D., we have newly organized an International Editorial Advisory Board. We look forward to incorporating more global edi- torial input into our content development. This month, cataract section edi- tor Bonnie An Henderson, M.D., enlisted our editorial board to nominate appropriate experts for our cover series. Interviewing multiple ophthalmolo- gists to provide balance and diversity of opinion will continue to be a signa- ture feature of EyeWorld articles. We particularly want to include and involve new faces—strong clinicians who are not already regulars on the podium or in print. As you may have noticed from recent issues, our section editors each have a monthly column called their "Corner of the world." This is their op- portunity to highlight a topic or individual expert of their choosing. I think that you'll find these varied columns to be very readable and topical, with the personal touch of each section editor. You will also find regular columns on advanced surgical topics headed by Richard S. Hoffman, M.D. (stepwise instruction of advanced techniques), Kevin M. Miller, M.D. (complicated case strategies), and Steven G. Safran, M.D. (surgical case-based problem solving). Finally, ASCRS is just as committed to teaching residents as it is to edu- cating experienced anterior segment surgeons. Reflecting this commitment, EyeWorld will feature two regular resident-oriented features that both debut this month—"Cataract tips from the teachers" and "EyeWorld journal club." The former column will be headed by Sherleen Chen, M.D., and Roberto Pineda, M.D., and will present pearls of a more basic nature from some of the country's best resident surgical attendings, as nominated by their own departments. For the second column, prominent residency programs will produce a journal club review of an important scientific study published in the concurrent issue of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. As the new chief medical editor, I am excited and honored to be work- ing alongside such a talented editorial board. As exemplified by our out- standing new editor and staff, I am also grateful and proud of the resources that ASCRS has invested into EyeWorld to further our organization's mission of providing quality education for eye surgeons with all levels of skill and experience.
