EW MEETING REPORTER August 2011 57 T he World Glaucoma Con- gress (WGC) opened June 29, 2011, with an encore of the best scientific presenta- tions from its constituent members, including the Australian and New Zealand Glaucoma Interest Group, the Canadian Glaucoma So- ciety, the Korean Glaucoma Society, the American Glaucoma Society, and many others. The society symposia were followed by a plenary lunch symposium, "The Pressures of Glau- coma." The day concluded with the Opening Session that celebrated the 4th biennial World Glaucoma Con- gress. American Glaucoma Society: The best of AGS highlights Steven Gedde, M.D., Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami, spoke on "Treatment outcomes in the Tube Versus Trabeculectomy (TVT) study after five years of follow-up." In this prospective study, patients with pre- vious trabeculectomy or cataract surgery with IOP >21 mm Hg on maximal medical therapy were ran- domized to either 350-mm² Baerveldt Glaucoma Implant (Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, Calif.) or trabeculectomy with mito- mycin C (MMC) 0.4 mg/ml for 4 minutes. After 5 years of follow up, the mean IOP and medication use was similar at 14.2 mm Hg on 1.4 medications in the tube group and 12.8 mm Hg on 1.2 medications in the trabeculectomy group. However, there was a higher rate of failure during the first 5 years of follow up in the tube group (26.1%) compared to in the trabeculectomy group (46.9%; p=0.002). The study demon- strated that both surgeries are rea- sonable options in the management of uncontrolled glaucoma after tra- beculectomy and cataract surgery, and provides the rationale for the prospective primary tube versus tra- beculectomy study that is currently underway. Steven Mansberger, M.D., Devers Eye Institute, Portland, Ore., compared the pre-op IOP (the mean IOP of the three visits prior to cataract surgery) to the post-op IOP (mean IOP on the three visits after cataract surgery) in 51 eyes from 33 patients enrolled in the Ocular Hy- pertension Treatment Study (OHTS) World Glaucoma Congress Paris, France Reporting live from the 2011 World Glaucoma Congress, Paris June 29-July 2, 2011 Editors' note: This Meeting Reporter contains original reporting by the EyeWorld news team and is supported by a grant from Alcon Inc.
