lenses that have changed my life," she said. "I wouldn't change any- thing—from [Dr. Henderson's] skilled diagnoses to her ability to de- vise a plan that was a perfect fit for me, deal with the unintended event, and create an opportunity for me to see as if I was 10 years old again. There is nothing else I could do medically that would have such an impact on my life." Nicholas Deane was referred to Dr. Henderson after he asked an- other surgeon about receiving Crystalens lenses (Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, N.Y.) in both eyes. The 67-year-old redeveloper does a great deal of reading and computer work and has to have good vision to see all of the ornate drawings used in his line of work. Since he normally wore contact lenses for hyperopia, Mr. Deane was irritated when his eyesight required him to wear glasses for near vision. "I always thought I'd be an- noyed by them, but what a pain," he said. "I don't understand how people live with them." "She is direct and took the time," he said, with a laugh. "I think I exasperate a lot of people because I really want to know, but she wasn't rattled. That helped the decision- making process along." Dr. Henderson, he said, under- promised and overdelivered. "She was emphatic that a lot of people don't get much accommoda- tion from them, but it seemed like the downside was so small, it was just a matter of the expense," Mr. Deane said. Six months after his November 2010 surgery, Mr. Deane developed posterior capsule opacification and August 2011 had capsulotomies performed on both eyes. "I was astonished at what a dif- ference that made," he said. Mr. Deane is currently utilizing a monovision contact lens in his right eye for reading and consider- continued on page 26 EW CATARACT 23 22-27 Cataract_EW August 2011-FINAL_Layout 1 7/27/11 3:41 PM Page 23
