EW NEWS & OPINION 9 T he ASCRS•ASOA Sympo- sium and Congress offered a wealth of material in terms of abstracts, courses, papers, posters, and films. Too busy to see all that you wanted to see? ASCRS and ASOA members can access the vast majority of the materials by going to www.ASCRS. org and selecting Post-Meeting Re- sources of the 2011 ASCRS Sympo- sium, ASOA Congress, and Technicians & Nurses Program. All of the post-meeting resources are archived there. If there is something you would like to see that isn't here, please email us at ascrs@ascrs.org. You will find: • Handouts to more than 40 courses • Abstracts for the papers presented at the meeting • Abstracts for the Best Papers of Session • Award-winning films and posters, and more. The following is a listing of the winners of the Film Festival and poster competition. To them we offer a congratulations and thanks for their contributions. 2011 ASCRS Film Festival winners Grand Prize: F50 Minimally Inva- sive External Mini-Glaucoma Shunt Implantation Without Conjunctival Dissection; Richard S. Hoffman, M.D., Eugene, Ore. Cataract Implant Surgery Amazing Out-take: F43 World's Hardest Cataract; producer: Barry A. Schechter, M.D., Boynton Beach, Fla. Srinivasan, April 2011 MRI of anterior segment of rabbit eyes Oliver Stachs, Ph.D., Soenke Langner, M.D., Thom Terwee, M.Sc., Ph.D., Katrin Sternberg, Ph.D., Heiner Martin, Dr-Ing, Klaus-Peter Schmitz, Ph.D., Norbert Hosten, M.D., Rudolf Guthoff, M.D. Investigators here assessed the lens geometry in rabbits that had un- dergone lens-refilling surgery using high-resolution MRI. At the 3- year post-op mark, investigators found that there was no visible interface in the eyes that had been refilled. However, they also found that the contralateral eye that had not been refilled was sig- nificantly larger than the one that had undergone the procedure. In- vestigators concluded that the MRI technique enabled them to effectively visualize the rabbit lens after refilling surgery invivo and to successfully assess lens shape. They stressed, however, that further study would be needed to determine the optimal amount of poly- mer to be injected during lens refilling surgery to attain a pre- dictable refractive outcome. Review/update: Endothelium after refractive surgery Maria A. Woodward, M.D., Henry F. Edelhauser, Ph.D. In this study, investigators reviewed the corneal endothelium and considered the impact that refractive surgery had on optical clarity. Investigators pointed out that an intact corneal endothelium was vital from a safety standpoint, and the success of refractive surgery could be adversely affected by an unstable corneal endothelium. In- vestigators noted that access to the endothelium has improved thanks to state-of-the-art technology. Numerous clinical trials have delved into the affect of refractive procedures, such as laser in situ keratomileusis, photorefractive keratectomy, phakic intraocular lenses, and adjuvants on the corneal endothelium. Investigators stressed that to minimize harmful effects on the corneal endothe- lium, safety guidelines for such refractive surgery procedures should be followed. Prevention of PCO using diclofenac sodium and nuclear rotation Yong Yao, M.D., Jun Shao, M.M.S., Xuhua Tan, M.M.S., Huiyan Xu, M.M.S., Weiping Hu, M.M.S., Hongyu Huang, M.M.S., Ying Cai, M.M.S., Lixia Liu, M.M.S. The aim in this comparative case series was to determine how pre- vention of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is affected by the combined use of diclofenac sodium and nuclear rotation. Cataract patients in the clinical study were divided into four groups. Those in group 1 underwent hydrodissection with balanced salt solution. For those in group 2, the same procedure was performed with lidocaine. In group 3, diclofenac sodium was used for the hydrodissection, and in group 4 a combination of diclofenac sodium and nuclear rotation was used. Investigators determined that at the 2-year mark, when it came to corrected distance visual acuity or corneal endothelial cell density, there was no significant difference detected among the groups. They did, however, find that those in groups 1 and 2 had significantly higher PCO than those in groups 3 and 4. Group 4 as a whole attained the lowest PCO score. The conclusion reached was that for up to 2 years post-op, a combined use of diclofenac sodium and nuclear rotation prevented PCO during hydrodissection.
