by Maxine Lipner Senior EyeWorld Contributing Editor Cataract and the compromised cornea Combined symposium promises a host of different perspectives A brand new course titled Cataract and the Compro- mised Cornea will make its debut at the 2011 ASCRS Symposium and Congress in San Diego. The session, slated to be held on March 27 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., will bring together cataract and corneal specialists, ac- cording to Mark Packer, M.D., clinical associate professor of ophthalmology, Casey Eye Institute, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland. Dr. Packer will be moderat- ing the session with Terry Kim, M.D., associate professor of ophthal- mology, Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, N.C. In this course, experts will dis- cuss material ranging from recogni- tion and treatment of dry eye and blepharitis to endothelial disease and dystrophy. Dr. Packer described the new course as rooted in a previ- ous joint session. "It grew out of a session 2 years ago that the cataract and glaucoma committees did on pseudoexfoliation, which was really successful," Dr. Packer said. "Since that was so successful, last year we decided to do a symposium with the retina committee." In that sympo- sium, presenters took four contro- versial areas and had a couple of people on each committee talk about those areas. Dual expertise This year's course will follow a simi- lar format. "We have six different topics and we're going to have one person from each committee give a talk on his or her perspective," Dr. Packer said. For instance, one area will be ocular surface disease. Presen- ters will discuss dry eye, blepharitis, and cataract surgery in that setting all-laser cataract and refractive surgery platform.
