Popular sessions in- cluded "Managing Cataract Compli- cations," which featured video cases demonstrating surgical and IOL complications and was moderated by David F. Chang, M.D., clinical professor of ophthalmology, Univer- sity of California, San Francisco. "New Technology in Cataract and Lens-Related Surgery," moder- ated by Dr. Lane, was also a big draw. The session high- lighted the latest tech- nological ad- vances in lens-related surgery, enabling the an- terior segment surgeon to move for- ward into the next decade. With all of the complicated is- sues surrounding healthcare, the "ASOA for MDs: Medicare Update" was a sought-after session. E. Ann Rose, Duncanville, Texas, went over the new reimbursement procedures, such as fee schedule changes, new Current Procedural Terminology and diagnosis code changes, and history and physical requirements for proce- dures preformed in ambulatory sur- gery centers. New this year was the ASOA practice management track for ad- ministrators, which included 12 events. "Meaningful Use of Elec- tronic Health Records" with Nancey McCann, director of government re- lations, ASCRS•ASOA, was an impor- tant session. It covered the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009, which authorized the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to provide financial incentives to eligi- ble professionals and hospitals that demonstrate "meaningful use" of certified electronic health record technology. Ms. McCann reviewed the definition of meaningful use and identified the reporting and pay- ment periods. The Saturday session "I'm the Leader—Now What?" with Steve Robinson, C.O.E., O.C.S., senior consultant, Advantage Administra- tion, Dallas, examined the differ- ences between leadership and February 2011 Winter Update continued from P. 3 management. During this session, attendees identified the differences that exist between management and leadership and learned how man- agers without leadership skills can affect patients, organization, and personnel.
