Retina Respondents weighed in on when they choose to perform OCT prior to cataract surgery. In pa- tients where the view of the fundus is adequate, 43% of respondents said they will perform OCT 100% of the time. On the other end of the spec- trum, 14% said they will not perform OCT, and 16% said they will perform it 1–25% of the time. My impression is most patients have OCT prior to any cataract surgery, whether it's for a monofocal or premium lens, depending on prac- tice setting and penetrance of premium intraoc- ular lenses. The majority of respondents (60%) did not perform intravitreal injections for patients with wet or dry macular degeneration. Survey respondents also answered on the primary pathology reasons they find that preclude the implantation of a multifocal IOL. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) had the largest percentage of responses, at 29%. Additionally, respondents indicated epiretinal membrane (25%), diabetic macular edema (9%), cystoid macular edema (7%), vitreomac- ular traction (4%), and chorioretinal scarring (3%), with 23% of respondents noting "other" reasons. While there are not firm contraindications for premium lenses, AMD and epiretinal mem- brane are common macular conditions, which make it more challenging to achieve perfect vision. –Michael Klufas, MD ASCRS Retina Clinical Committee Chair n=981 When you find pathology that precludes implantation of a multifocal IOL, what is the primary reason? 4% Vitreomacular traction 3% Chorioretinal scarring 23% Other AMD 29% 25% Epiretinal membrane 7% Cystoid macular edema 9% DME n=981 Do you personally perform intravitreal injections for your patients with wet or dry macular degeneration?
