CREATING A TRULY COMPREHENSIVE SUBSPECIALTY SOCIETY 54 | SUPPLEMENT TO EYEWORLD ASCRS and industry Many of ASCRS' educational initiatives have been made possible due to unrestricted educational grants from industry. ASCRS has also provided a connection between in- dustry and the physician within the ASCRS Exhibit Hall, through EyeWorld Corporate events, through equipment and materials donation to skills transfer labs, and at YES Connect Industry Dinners. e ASCRS Post-Refractive Calculator is the most visited tool on the ASCRS website, generat- ing more than 1 million visits annually. is calculator, which debuted in 2007, was born out of necessity. While refractive surgery was beginning to take off in the 1990s and into the 2000s, it became clear that the outcomes of cat- aract surgery for patients who had prior LASIK were relatively poor. As such, Dr. Koch recalled, there was a proliferation of formulas, but none of the most accurate formulas were on one site, forc- ing surgeons to perform multiple calculations with different formulas, which was time consuming and created a risk for transcription errors. Warren Hill, MD, saw Dr. Koch's 2006 JCRS editorial outlining this challenge and the need for a consistent, uncomplicated tool to streamline the process and ensure accuracy. Dr. Hill created an Excel spreadsheet with carefully selected formu- las and shared it with Dr. Koch, who, aer seeing it, thought it could serve surgeons around the globe if put on the ASCRS website. "I enlisted the help of my colleague, Li Wang, MD, PhD, who with her husband, Jianzhong Ma, developed the website based on Warren's spreadsheet. Dr. Hill, Dr. Wang, and I continue to update it as new formulas become available and validated, always trying to ensure that we have a carefully curated set of formulas that have demonstrated good outcomes," Dr. Koch said. e success of this calculator demonstrated the need for a range of tools for IOL power calcula- tions, postoperative calculators, and data analysis, Dr. Hill said. e ASCRS Calculators & Tools webpage continues to serve as a repository for up- to-date online tools.
