30 | EYEWORLD | APRIL 2023 ASCRS NEWS Contact Holland: eholland@holprovision.com by Ellen Stodola Editorial Co-Director About the physician Edward Holland, MD Professor of Ophthalmology University of Cincinnati Cincinnati, Ohio Lecture, as well as keynote speaker Dan Lerner, a professor at New York University, who will speak on "Goodness, Greatness, and Grit." On the Main Stage on Sunday, we'll have a futurist lecture from Shawn DuBravac, and the Lind- strom Symposium, in which we cover all aspects of anterior segment surgery. The Main Stage on Monday will feature the Innovators Session, including the Charles D. Kelman, MD, Innova- tor's Lecture. EyeWorld: What have you seen over the years and how has it changed since you first started? Dr. Holland: I think the way that we deliver education has changed. We've moved to be a lot more interactive with audience participation. We have also moved away from programs with a series of single speakers to programs with more panel discussion. We've also kept the traditional things, like the paper sessions, where we see great presen- tations by not only the well-known researchers in ophthalmology but also from young clinicians sometimes presenting for their first time. We're going to end a day early this year on Monday instead of Tuesday, and it reflects what other meetings have done. The meeting will be packed with good content, and we hope people will stay through Monday. EyeWorld: What do you see as the future of the Society? Dr. Holland: I think the organization is in great hands. We have a lot of young people within ASCRS' committees. We've had turnover with some long-standing board members rotating off. The new members are incredibly bright, dedicated, and innovative. Our executive direc- tor, Steve Speares, has done an incredible job leading a reorganization of ASCRS as well as navigating the difficult time during COVID-19. There's no meeting that is as good as the ASCRS Annual Meeting at teaching anterior segment surgeons. Surgery has changed dra- matically in the last 15–20 years in all aspects of anterior segment surgery, and I think ASCRS has been right at the forefront of providing the latest, greatest information and techniques. ASCRS ANNUAL MEETING PREVIEW Q&A with Edward Holland, MD, former ASCRS Program Chair E dward Holland, MD, served as Program Chair for the ASCRS Annual Meeting since 2012. His time in this position ended in December 2022. He spoke to EyeWorld about his experience, his in- volvement in ASCRS, and what to look forward to at this year's meeting. EyeWorld: How did you get involved with ASCRS and begin as Program Chair? Dr. Holland: My first position at ASCRS was when I was asked to start the first Cornea Clini- cal Committee. ASCRS had Cataract, Refractive, and Glaucoma Clinical Committees. ASCRS even had Retina and Pediatric Clinical Commit- tees, but it didn't have cornea. We started the first Cornea Clinical Committee in 2005, and it's one of the things that I'm very proud of. If you look at our Annual Meeting's pro- gramming, in terms of content, cataract is number one, and medical and surgical cornea is number two. It's become a major part of our educational focus, and it paralleled with what was happening in corneal transplantation. From that point, I was selected to join the Executive Committee, and I was close with Roger Steinert, MD, who preceded me as Pro- gram Chair. Roger asked me if I would, with the Board's approval, consider becoming Program Chair. It's been one of my favorite positions ever. EyeWorld: What can we expect to see at this year's meeting? Dr. Holland: This year, there will be three chairs of the general sessions, which we've rebranded as ASCRS Main Stage. The Main Stage on Friday will cover what was tradition- ally the Opening General Session on Saturday. That will take place after the Subspecialty Day programming. There will be an interview with the outgoing president Doug Rhee, MD, and an interview with incoming president Elizabeth Yeu, MD. We'll also have the presentation of the Educator Award, the presentation of the Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award, and the Hall of Fame. I will chair that session. The Main Stage on Saturday will feature the Binkhorst
