A family of ophthalmologists continued on page 12 T his month's ASCRS Member Spotlight features a family of ophthalmologists: Abhay Vasavada, MS, FRCS, Shail Vasavada, DO, DNB, Vaishali Vasa- vada, MS, Viraj Vasavada, MS, and Samaresh Srivastava, DNB. Dr. Abhay Vasavada has been a member of ASCRS for nearly 30 years. He first heard about the society in the 1980s when he was visiting the late Dr. Albert Galand, a renowned ophthalmologist known for his con- tributions to IOL design. His first experience with ASCRS was attending an annual meeting. "Everyone—the clinicians and the staff—was very helpful and supportive. The experience has been marvelous." Throughout the years, Dr. Abhay Vasavada has been an active member of ASCRS. He has served on several committees, has been on the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery editori- al board, and continues to be an educator by regularly presenting at the annual meeting. In 2011, he was awarded the Binkhorst Medal for outstanding contributions to the understanding and practice of anterior segment surgery and presented the associated lecture at the annual meeting. Dr. Abhay Vasavada credits his father, who was an ophthalmologist and practiced commu- nity medicine for patients in need, as spurring his own interest in ophthalmology. Continuing the family tradition, Dr. Abhay Vasavada's children are all practicing ophthal- mologists and members of ASCRS: son Shail (member since 2015), and daughters Vaishali (member since 2008) and Viraj (member since 2008). In addition, his son-in-law, Dr. Samaresh Srivastava (married to Vaishali), is an ophthal- mologist and has been an ASCRS member since 2010.
