Austin Fox, MD T his month's spotlight member is Austin Fox, MD. Dr. Fox is a new- er member of ASCRS, joining the organization in 2018. He heard about ASCRS during his first year of res- idency from co-residents who had attended the Annual Meeting. "They raved about the meeting, [the organization], and all it has to offer residents and young ophthalmologists." After joining ASCRS, Dr. Fox took advan- tage of multiple ASCRS resources offered to members. "ASCRS does a great job creating content for residents and offers unique learning opportunities," he said. "I first attended a webi- nar on the basics of cataract surgery and have since attended more and have also learned a good deal following threads on the EyeConnect discussion forums. Both have been valuable resources during residency training." Dr. Fox was recently awarded a Young Eye Surgeons (YES) Legislative Fly-In scholarship. He will travel to Washington, D.C. this summer to visit Capitol Hill and meet with local sena- tors and representatives. "Learning more about issues surrounding scope of practice, I have become more aware of the impact that legisla- tion may have on different aspects of our prac- tice and patient care," he said. "I am looking forward to meeting colleagues and legislators to learn more about these issues to ultimately improve patient care." In addition, Dr. Fox was selected as a 2019 Resident Excellence winner and attended his first ASCRS ASOA Annual Meeting in San Diego. Dr. Fox became interested in ophthalmolo- gy while working at an ophthalmology practice and watching cataract surgeries in college. During this experience, he "first realized the huge impact that ophthalmologists can have in restoring vision." In medical school, Dr. Fox participated in a research year at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). "I was fortunate to work with great mentors, Dr. Nida Sen and the late Dr. Robert Nussenblatt, at the National Eye Institute, which ultimately solidified my desire to pursue ophthalmology as a career," he said. "I am grateful to the many influential mentors and ophthalmologists who have helped foster my interest in ophthalmology." Dr. Fox is a resident at the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He received his medical degree from the University of South Alabama Col- lege of Medicine in Mobile, Alabama. During medical school, he completed the NIH Medical Research Scholars Program and Duke Universi- ty School of Medicine's Clinical Research Train- ing Program while at the National Institutes of Health. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama.
