ROGRAM PREVIEW P by Ellen Stodola EyeWorld Senior Staff Writer/ Meetings Editor Contact information Holland: eholland@holprovision.com T he Sunday Summit will be held on May 5 at the ASCRS ASOA Annual Meeting from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The session has two parts: the annual ASCRS Lecture on Science, Medicine and Technology and The Voice of Ophthalmology. Edward Holland, MD, ASCRS program chair, spoke to EyeWorld about what to expect at this year's Sunday Summit. ASCRS Lecture on Science, Medicine and Technology The ASCRS Lecture on Sci- ence, Medicine and Technolo- gy is given by a non-ophthal- mologist but speaks to a topic of interest to our audience, Dr. Holland said. "This year we have Dr. John Medina, who is a developmental molecular biologist," he said. "He has a lifelong fascination with how the mind reacts to and orga- nizes information." Dr. Medina is the author of a number of books, including Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Sur- viving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School, Brain Rules for Aging Well: 10 Principles for Staying Vital, Happy, and Sharp, and Brain Rules for Baby: How to Raise a Smart and Happy Child from Zero to Five. Dr. Holland said Dr. Medina will focus on how ophthalmology relates to his concepts of the brain. "No matter your specialty in ophthalmolo- gy, I think there's interest in how the brain works and how it ages," Dr. Holland said. The Voice of Ophthalmology The second part of the Sunday Summit will be The Voice of Ophthalmology, back for its second year. "Last year, it was very exciting and a stand- ing room-only crowd," Dr. Holland said. This session is modeled after the popular tele- vision show The Voice, including the iconic chairs and celebrity coaches. During the session, five contestants will present their opinion on current and controversial topics, and the session's coaches decide if they want to support each contestant. The contestant then picks one of the coaches to further debate the topic with an expert panel. Last year's coaches are back again, including Eric Donnenfeld, MD, Elizabeth Yeu, MD, John Berdahl, MD, and Iqbal "Ike" Ahmed, MD. "It's an interesting and entertaining format, and at the end of the day, it's also very good edu- cation," Dr. Holland said. This year, ASCRS members submitted video auditions for The Voice of Ophthalmology and the contestants were selected from these videos. Dr. Holland said there was a large interest in partici- pating, and there are no repeat contestants from last year. The topics for this year's The Voice of Oph- thalmology lectures will include bilateral sequential cataract surgery, evaluation of the use of MIGS, intracameral antibiotics for endophthalmitis, if anterior chamber lenses should still be used, and premium IOLs in patients with other comorbidities.
