"Even though I was in elementary school, I decid- ed to become like him—I would have to become an ophthalmologist." Dr. Whitman is president and chief surgeon of the Key-Whitman Eye Center. He received his medical degree and completed an internship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Dr. Whitman completed his ophthalmology residency at Scott and White Clin- ic in Temple, Texas. Dr. Whitman is one of only a few physicians in North Texas to be board certified in both cataract surgery and LASIK by the American Board of Eye Surgeons. He received the Ameri- can Medical Association Physician's Recognition Award and is a past president of the American College of Eye Surgeons and the Dallas Acad- emy of Ophthalmology. He has served on the boards of the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society, American College of Eye Surgeons, and the Society for Excellence in Eyecare. He is a clinical correspondent for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is a past president of the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society. Every month, ASCRS features one of its dedicated member volunteers. This spotlight introduces an individual who has contributed to the society's outstanding education and initiatives, helping members strengthen their skills and sharpen their expertise—and provide better care to patients. ASCRS member spotlight: Jeffrey Whitman, MD Contact information Monasterio: dmonasterio@ascrs.org T his month's spotlight member is Jeffrey Whitman, MD. Dr. Whitman has been a member of ASCRS for more than 25 years, joining the organization in 1993. He discovered ASCRS during his residency and attend- ed his first Annual Meeting. Since then, he has attended more than 30 ASCRS ASOA Annual Meetings. "I found the meeting to be on the forefront of what is new and current in oph- thalmic surgery today," he said. He has been a highly active member, serving in various roles. He was involved in the early ver- sions of EyeConnect, ASCRS' online discussion forum. He serves on the Instrumentation and IOL Subcommittee, as well as the ASCRS Oph- thalmic Sterilization Task Force, chaired by David Chang, MD, which has done groundbreaking work regarding TASS and instrument sterilization protocols. He has also played important roles at several meetings including as a cataract/refractive poster judge, presenter, judge for paper presenta- tions, and a Skills Transfer Lab instructor. Dr. Whitman has also been involved in the ASCRS Foundation's Operation Sight domestic program, being the first active volunteer in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. "For me as a physician, Operation Sight is all about giving back to those who cannot see to do their jobs and do not have the money or insurance to help themselves. My staff and I have fun working with these patients and have a great team-building experience by doing this good work." Dr. Whitman first became interested in ophthalmology when he was a child. His younger sister was born with amblyopia/strabismus and underwent surgery and patching therapy.
