Brad Fund- ingsland, the executive editor at the time, and I routinely spoke at least five times a day—there was no texting or email! We strenuously avoided bias by having an average of 5.7 sources per article. Brad and I were so thrilled and proud to launch this new publishing venture for ASCRS. —Marguerite McDonald, MD I joined the editorial staff as chief med- ical editor concentrating on cataract and glaucoma to complement Margue- rite's expertise in cornea and refractive surgery. As a society's publication, we developed an editorial philosophy that reflected the vision of ASCRS and adopted a style that featured multiple points of view in the articles. We sought to distinguish EyeWorld from other publications by encouraging a broad and diverse educational and informational milieu. Our readers viewed an article from several perspectives rather than simply accept a singular clinical message. —Stephen Obstbaum, MD When I joined the EyeWorld editori- al staff I joined Steve Obstbaum as co-medical editor. Steve and I initiated the idea of the EyeWorld section heads being the Clinical Committee chairs. We had the ASCRS Clinical Commit- tee chairs be guest editors for issues dealing with their specialty to bring a high level of expertise to each issue. After a couple of years Ed Holland joined as a third editor, bringing corneal expertise to EyeWorld, and suggested the idea of a box for each featured article describing why an article was important and what was new about it. We also introduced video sidebars for the techniques described. In all it was a great experience and an honor to participate in what is clearly the best ophthalmology news magazine. —Stephen Lane, MD EyeWorld has been extraordinarily fortunate to have been led by dedi- cated and talented medical editors throughout its his- tory. I have invited these pillars of ophthalmology to discuss the importance of EyeWorld to celebrate our new format. —Eric Donnenfeld, MD, EyeWorld Chief Medical Editor Reflections from past EyeWorld medical editors I had the honor of being EyeWorld co-editor with Steve Lane and Steve Obstbaum. It was an exciting time for ASCRS and EyeWorld as the subspecial- ty of cornea was growing within our organization. Cornea had recently been added as the newest Clinical Committee, and my role was to develop the cornea content. What we discovered was our readership wanted cor- nea information even if they were not a cornea specialist. Topics such as dry eye, ocular surface disease, and the ever-changing area of endothelial keratoplasty were of great interest. I think EyeWorld covers cornea topics better than any of the ophthalmic magazines. —Edward Holland, MD During my time as chief medical editor, I asked each of our subspecialty sec- tion editors to highlight an interesting topic or development from their own corner of the "eye" world in a monthly column. I wanted them to establish an ongoing personal connection with our readers. I used my monthly "Chief medical editor's corner of the world" to spotlight interesting ophthal- mologists and their stories. Among those that I interviewed were innovators, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, women leaders, academicians, humanitarians, politicians, military heroes, a nov- elist, and an award-winning photographer. These 48 columns celebrated the creativity, passion, per- severance, and compassion that are so prevalent throughout our profession, and I hope that these interviews inspired EyeWorld's readers as much as they inspired me. —David Chang, MD
