EW PROGRAM PREVIEW 58 2018 AAO Annual Meeting • October 27–30, 2018 by Liz Hillman EyeWorld Senior Staff Writer from 9:00–11:15 a.m., "A Step-by- Step Primer to Starting LASIK in 2018" from 10:15 a.m.–12:30 p.m., "Modern Understanding of Accom- modation: Treatment Approaches, Current and Future" from 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (which will include surgical and therapeutic techniques) and "Solving the High Myopia Problem with Phakic IOLs" from 12:45–3:00 p.m. In terms of refractive-focused wet lab offerings throughout the meeting, an opportunity for laser refractive surgery will be featured on Saturday from 3:00–5:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., and a Sunday lab on astigma- tism-correcting corneal incisions will take place from 4:00–5:30 p.m. There will also be several opportu- nities for breakfast with experts on topics ranging from various aspects of SMILE to topography to cross- linking to transepithelial surface ablation. EW abnormal patterns and the different imaging technologies, and "The SMILE Learning Curve: Management of Challenges and Complications" from 4:30–5:30 p.m. There are several refractive surgery courses on Monday, Oct. 29, starting with "Multifocal IOL: Cur- rent State of the Art" and "A Step- by-Step Primer to Starting SMILE in 2018" both taking place from 9:00–10:00 a.m., followed by "Thera- peutic Corneal Refractive Surgery" from 2:00–4:15 p.m., "Refractive Surgery for Life: Pearls for Incorpo- rating Seven Refractive Procedures into Your Practice" from 3:15–4:15 p.m., "Corneal Topographic Analy- sis and Anterior Segment Imaging: Pearls for Your Clinical Practice" from 3:15–5:30 p.m., and "Presby- opia: Full Throttle" from 4:30–5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30 holds "Topog- raphy-Customized Ablations: Evolv- ing Applications From Therapeutic to Virgin Eye Refractive Indications" introduce residents to cornea and lens-based refractive surgery, and another from 10:15–11:45 a.m. will discuss various topics in the era of femtosecond lasers, such as advances in femtosecond laser-as- sisted cataract surgery, astigmatism management, pockets for intracor- neal inlays, SMILE, and refractive indexing. Instructional courses focused on refractive surgery begin on Saturday, Oct. 27 with the diagnosis and management of intraoperative complications from femtosecond LASIK from 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., followed by the 2:00–3:00 p.m. vid- eo-based "Danger Zone: Refractive Surgery Nightmares and Worst-Case Scenarios." These scenarios will include flap complications, decen- tered ablations, ectasia, and phakic IOL complications, among others.
