A S C R S World view Adapting to new challenges F or many people the concept of innovation is synonymous with new technology, but in a broader sense, it is about reimagining how to approach a challenge. One of the challenges we face is how to ensure that new devices and drugs are both safe and effective. The U.S. FDA is considered by many around the world as setting the highest standard of assurance of product safety. The John Vukich, M.D., international editor process to achieve approval in the U.S. is also long, expensive, and felt by many to be a burden that stifles the availability of new devices in the U.S. In this issue of EyeWorld, Drs. Lindstrom, Waring, and Hovanesian reflect on the role of physicians, industry, and the FDA in making the newest treatments available to our patients. The explosion of information over the past few decades has also made us re-examine what it means to be well trained as an ophthalmologist. Residency programs are evolving to meet the challenge. Drs. Steinert, Weikert, McDonnell, and McLeod share their view of the new priorities in residency programs around the country. Its a new way of thinking about residency education, and it will undoubtly shape the way we deliver care to our patients. In this issue we examine the new core competencies for current residents. One of the challenges of processing vast amounts of information is how to best organize and retrieve the parts that are relevant to patient care. Electronic health records are here to stay, but that does not mean the transition has been easy. In the article Making headway with EHR systems, several leading practitioners share their experience and offer advice on the pros and cons of systems they have adopted. Importantly, they share the lessons learned along with some valuable tips we can all use. Ophthalmology has a proud tradition of being at the forefront of innovation. We are constantly adopting new technology and adapting to new challenges. We hope you enjoy this, the final issue of EyeWorld for 2012. It is certain that the New Year will bring with it new developments and new opportunities. And it is equally certain that EyeWorld will continue to report on the issues that shape our profession.
