The state of technology in ophthalmology EyeWorld sent a survey out to all ASCRS members this month to get a pulse on the state of technology in ophthalmology. It isn't surprising that e-prescribing and EHR top the list of the technologies that people are integrating into their practice; however, the use of technol- ogy in the area of patient education is another story. Even though a resounding majority of respondents report having the latest technology at their fin- gertips (88% own a PDA and 65% own a tablet), just 41% are using digital/electronic materials to educate patients, only 17% have decided to incorporate educational software applications into their practice (the number is nearly double that for traditional patient education videos), and a mere 3% report giving patients an actual application to use for educational purposes.
