An update on crosslinking Crosslinking remains a hot topic in ophthalmology. R. Doyle Stulting, M.D., Woolfson Eye Institute, Atlanta, presented an overview of the technology in the day's last prriil 20-24,2012 | | B oth 1907Booth 190 7 session. The technology is not yet available in the U.S., despite 10 years of research proving its effectiveness in stiffening the cornea for kerato- conic and ectatic patients, Dr. Stulting said. "This is a disease that has no treatment; crosslinking is something that we can offer our patients that will give them a life- time of good vision and avoiding transplants," he said. Currently, researchers are studying how to shorten the exposure times and are looking at iontophoresis devices to distribute the riboflavin, Dr. Stulting said. He expects crosslinking to be approved in the U.S. in the next year and continues to have high hopes for its usefulness. "We can eradicate a disease with very few ramifica- tions," Dr. Stulting said. Dr. Chan added that patients with autism and Down syndrome have been able to benefit from crosslinking technol- ogy as well.
