Also on Monday, Oct. 20, at the Global Forum symposium, a panel of international experts will discuss the current status of global eye re- search. The symposium will include a presentation by the World Health Organization and talks covering the history of epidemiological studies in public eye health, current studies on the leading causes and economics of blindness, and the logistical, ethical, and financial considerations of global research. In addition to the academic and clinical symposia, the meeting will offer a diverse array of options for earning CME credit. CME options include "Breakfast with the Experts," skills transfer labs, and original pa- per sessions. Skills transfer labs will include femtosecond laser cataract surgery, corneal collagen crosslink- ing, periocular rejuvenation with fillers and Botox (onabotulinu - toxinA, Allergan, Irvine, Calif.), and other techniques. Physicians can also participate in non-CME sessions at the Learning Lounge, where ex- perts in different fields will facilitate small, informal group discussions. The Academy will present the "Ophthalmic Premier League" team video competition on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Four teams will compete for the AAO-OPL trophy based on their videos on managing cataract complications. Unlike the World Cup, the trophy will be awarded based on audience votes. Exhibit hall The exhibit hall will be open 9 a.m.–5 p.m., October 18–20, and 9 a.m.–1 p.m. on October 21. The Technology Pavilion at the exhibit hall will feature presentations show- casing the latest technology trends, equipment, and software to benefit ophthalmology practices. The hall will also house a special exhibit from the Museum of Vision in San Francisco. Titled "Beyond Ophthalmology, Beyond the Clinic," the exhibit will focus on physicians who have achieved fame in other disciplines such as literature, politics, sports, and the arts. To round out Mr. Woodruff's story, speakers will discuss ocular and visual out- comes of TBI, mechanisms of injury, and the integrated multidisciplinary approach to treating a TBI patient. Other programming Highlights from the named lectures include the Bruce E. Spivey, MD, Lecture titled, "Risk Management and Patient Safety," given by Ajit K. Sachdeva, MD, FRSC, FACS. The founding director of the Division of Education at the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Sachdeva devel- oped and implemented innovative educational programs for surgeons, residents, medical students, and members of surgical teams. Dr. Sachdeva will discuss education and training programs that enhance patient safety and minimize the risk of adverse outcomes. There are two new lectures. The inaugural Dr. Allan Jensen and Claire Jensen Lecture in Professionalism and Ethics will be given by Gerald B. Hickson, MD, on Monday, Oct. 20. The inaugural Jones/Smolin Lecture will be given by Russell N. Van Gelder, MD, PhD, during "Clinical Pearls in the Diagnosis of Masquerades in Infec- Special guests Several special guests will lend their views and personal experiences to sessions on Monday, Oct. 20. Senator Rand H. Paul, MD (R-KY), will give this year's Parker Health Lecture during "The Affordable Care Act: Present and Future Prospects for Ophthalmology," and award- winning journalist Bob Woodruff will speak at the "Visual Impact of Traumatic Brain Injury: Lessons Learned" special session. Senator Paul will present his views on healthcare as an ophthal- mologist and lawmaker. He and oth- er speakers will provide insight into how ophthalmologists can respond and adapt to the changes imposed by the Affordable Care Act to the health insurance environment, such as the addition of more patients covered by insurance, Medicaid expansion, new individual insur- ance mandates, and new insurance exchanges for comparison shopping. Mr. Woodruff will lend a more personal perspective to the "Visual Impact of Traumatic Brain Injury" session. Co-anchor for ABC's World News Tonight and reporter for ABC News, Mr. Woodruff suffered a trau- matic brain injury (TBI) as the result of an explosion while on assign- ment in Iraq in 2006. Mr. Woodruff was not expected to survive, yet he Meeting will focus on adaptation and innovation in a changing medical environment T he 2014 American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) meeting will take place at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chi- cago from October 18–21. It is the Academy's 118th annual meeting, and this year's program will be held in conjunction with the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE). Subspecialty days will be held on October 17 and 18, focusing on glaucoma, cornea, oculofacial plastic surgery, ocular oncology and pathology, pediatric ophthalmology, refractive surgery, retina, and uveitis. More than 50 symposia will take place during the 4-day meeting, many in conjunction with other organizations, according to infor- mation from the AAO website. AAO and the SOE will hold 3 joint "View Across the Pond" sessions focusing on how the practice of ophthalmol- ogy differs between the U.S. and Europe in the subspecialties, cataract/IOLs, cornea, and retina.
