He is also studying how viruses cause immune deficiency and cancer, the role of endocannabinoids in hematopoiesis, mechanisms of liver injury due to hepatitis C virus, and the effects of novel cell cycle inhibitors against mantle cell lymphoma. He received his B.A. from Columbia College summa cum laude and his M.D. from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He served his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and his specialty fellowships in hematology and oncology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Children���s Hospital/Sidney Farber Cancer Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston. Dr. Hartzband is a member of the faculty at the Harvard Medical School and the Division of Endocrinology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Hartzband is a noted endocrinologist and educator specializing in disorders of the thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands, and in women���s health. She is regularly featured among America���s Best Doctors. A graduate of Radcliffe College, Harvard University, and Harvard Medical School, she has authored articles in the New England Journal of Medicine on the impact of electronic records, uniform practice guidelines, monetary incentives, and the internet on the culture of clinical care. The Science and Medicine Lecture was established by ASCRS as a forum for expanding and enriching appreciation of the fields of science and medicine outside the field of ophthalmology. The annual Science and Medical Lecture aims to encourage attendees to think about larger issues in the practice of medicine and honors those whose curiosity and constant striving for innovation have led them to investigate aspects of medicine and science that broaden, enliven, and inspire.
